Rough Diamonds is the name of Greater Lowell’s soccer team that competes in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Each season (May-July) NPSL players compete for a spot on the National Showcase roster. Nationwide, many former NPSL players have been drafted to Major League Soccer teams, including Chris Wondolowski, Kwadwo Poku, and Lars Eckenrode.
Rough Diamonds is a typical channel for soccer players to launch a professional career. The team is comprised of players from the Greater Lowell region and beyond. New England has six NPSL teams, but only two in Massachusetts.
Our focus is increasing visibility for our players. Each year, over 50 MLS and international coaches attend the NPSL Showcase. Rough Diamonds sent four players to the NPSL Combine Showcase in 2017. This past January 2018, another player was chosen to play for an expansion team in Florida. Many NPSL players attend colleges across the country, as we are an amateur team that allows for them to maintain their NCAA eligibility and still compete against professional teams. We exist for the niche group of players who desire a credible, alternative opportunity to be seen.
Rough Diamonds Soccer Club emerged in November 2016, after its departure from the now-defunct Green Dragons (GLUFC). Andrea Gauntlett came onboard to helm operations and reinstated the NPSL membership, for the 2015 season. After the split, the team relocated to Tyngsboro and rebranded itself as Greater Lowell NPSL Football Club. Rough Diamonds, (GL NPSL’s nickname), is now the new name, as reflected in its newly designed logo.
“Training & Character.” We believe in continuous training that enhances one’s character. Greater Lowell Rough Diamonds provides a high-level environment that enhances each player’s good character, allowing them to transition over to the next level of their professional journey. We provide visibility for authentic talent to be discovered, drafted, and move on to the next level of their career trajectory.
